Child's Sugar-Plum Fairy Apron When I put on my apron, I feel like baking. Like putting on a uniform, having the right clothes for the job makes a difference. I’ve started to collect aprons. The farm scene I bought from a garage sale for 50 cents, the thin cotton, blue-flowered vintage apron that I’ve never worn, and the sunflower apron that I wear nearly every day--each apron has it’s own personality. My mother passed down a few aprons that she used to wear, white with lace and formal enough for a cocktail party. (That is, IF we ever host a cocktail party).
Evident in oil paintings, aprons were worn by peasants in the middle ages. The simple design, a rectangle of muslin folded over and tied in the back, hardly compares to the ruffled, colorful prints worn today, but they are just as useful. Besides protecting my clothing, the apron's skirt helps to carry potatoes from the basement, green beans from the garden, or rolls from the deep freeze. If aprons had a fan page, I’d “like” it.
