Book Reviews

For My First Grandchild
I loved the book, Hope sees her Condor.  It is adorable, lovely, fun and deserves a wide readership of parents and children. I shall save it for my first grandchild. Although I am not a birder I have been to several bird sanctuaries in Florida.
--Ruth Kovner, New York City

A Special Day
Question: What is better than a picture book with gorgeous illustrations?
Answer: A picture book with gorgeous illustrations PLUS a delightful story
Hope Sees Her Condor is about a day spent with Grandpa, but not an ordinary day. Grandpa and Hope go birdwatching (or “birding”) on the mountain, spotting different birds, pictured in this lovely book. Then, the huge condor flies overhead, amazing to see. And after this remarkable experience, there is another surprise that brings this wonderful book to its satisfying conclusion. This is a special day for Grandpa and Hope and a special book for the child in your life.
--Betty Farber, M.Ed. Early Childhood Education, New York City

HOPE SEES HER CONDOR
by Lester Feldman

Picture

Lester Feldman, the author and illustrator, has been a Birder since he was Hope's age. He has seen 650 plus bird species in North America where he prefers to "Bird." A retired Advertising Art Director, he now Birds mainly from the windows of his house.
Bernice, Lester's wife of 70 years, created the typography for this book. Lester refers to Bernice as his "Creative Director."

What a delight!
My now-grown son and I have been birders for decades, learning from each other. One of my most delightful memories is of the Christmas Day we counted over 300 bald eagles in a little over an hour in a nearby refuge! Knowledge is shared, person to person, but that sense of awe wells from within. This book captures that special feeling. Although a friend gave me this book to review, I will be buying a copy for my grandson's birthday in honor of his father passing onto him our love of birds. My only regret is that the book wasn't twice as long! Charming.
--Jan McLaughlin, retired public school teacher, Missouri

A special outing with Grandpa turns into a momentous occasion with the rarest of sightings both large and small. Any birders out there will recognize the passion behind this story that lives in memory for generations. And it is made all the more significant as we discover that Grandpa is Lester Feldman, who wrote and illustrated this story at the age of 91! Lester Feldman’s experience and talent as a Creative Director in the golden age of illustration is evident in his beautifully spare art for Hope Sees Her Condor. Bernice Feldman, his wife of 70 years, showcases the design and illustrations with her clear and clean typesetting, in a font easy to read for young and old.-- Susan Eaddy (from Amazon)
